National Tree Week 2013 – March 3rd – 10th

National Tree Week is an annual week-long  festival celebrating all positive aspects of trees in our lies  and  environment.  It is organized by the Tree Council of Ireland with  the  support of Coillte. The theme of the 2013 week is ‘A Feast  of  Trees’.

As  part of National Tree Week, the  Limerick& District  Chapter of  the Irish Woodturners’ Guild organized two tree  planting events in Limerick  National schools.

Tom O’Halloran, Treasurer and Maidie   O’Halloran, Secretary, traveled to Barna National School,Pallasgreen,  Co.  Limerick.

Tom gave an  informative and interesting presentation on the history of wood  turning in  Ireland and also the native trees of Ireland and their uses. The  children  had an opportunity to look at different types of wood and also some of  the  pieces which can be created by wood turning.Tom and Maidie also  presented  the school with a gift of a Rowan tree (Mountain Ash) on behalf of the   Limerick chapter of the Irish Wood Turners’ Guild. The tree was planted on  the  school  grounds.

On the 9th of March 2013 Brendan  Collins, Chairperson, Joe Banks,  committee member, John Ryan and Aidan  McNamara along with the help of Michael  Coughlan, the school caretaker,  set up a display of a selection of our wood  turned work, posters,  leaflets, large and small wood samples in the school P.E.   hall.

Brendan showed the pupils, teachers and parents gathered in  the P.E.  hall, samples of wood and a selection of pieces crafted from wood
including  bowls, table lamps and candle sticks holders. They were all  interested in a  plank of ash which had a template of a hurley drawn out.  The pupils were also  very impressed when we showed them a large oak  segment that was over 160 years  old. They had a chance to count all the  tree rings. Some students were lucky  enough to take home some wood  samples.

John Ryan highlighted the importance of trees in our  environment and the  work of both CRANN and the Tree Council of Ireland in
fostering this cause. It  is so important to look after all trees to make  sure they grow long after we are  all gone.

The  sun came out in time to plant a Mountain Ash tree in front of the Kildimo   National School with the help of pupils, which was donated by the Limerick  &  District Chapter.

The school pupils and teachers in both  schools were delighted that the  tree planting and presentation by the  Limerick & District chapter took place  in their schools.
