Woodturning is an ancient craft, which in the past was a trade in its own right, and it was possible to serve an apprenticeship to become a woodturner.
This is no longer the case, now the craft of woodturning is promoted by the Irish Woodturners Guild, through local chapter seminars and an annual national seminar. Woodturning has evolved over the years into a craft/art form which has pushed back the boundaries of what can be made from wood, and is now only limited by the imagination of the turner.
Limerick has been fortunate to have some celebrated woodturners working in the area, namely Brother Ciarian Forbes of Glenstal Abbey who is a world renowned bowl turner whose pieces were presented as gifts to visiting dignitaries by past Presidents and Government Ministers. Liam Flynn is a woodturner who has firmly established himself as one of the foremost exponent of this craft/art form in recent years, his elegant pieces are in galleries around the world. He had a very successful exhibition of his “Retrospective and New” in The Hunt Museum.
